PETALING JAYA, July 24, 2025 — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced tonight that Cambodia and Thailand are open to considering a ceasefire as border hostilities between their armies continue into a second day. The statement was reported by The Straits Times.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he had engaged directly with both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to call for immediate de-escalation of the conflict.
"This evening, I spoke with both the Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Manet and the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai to express Malaysia’s deep concern over the ongoing border tensions," Anwar stated.
As ASEAN Chair for 2025, Anwar emphasized Malaysia’s active role in mediating the situation. "I appealed directly to both leaders for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further hostilities and to foster an environment conducive to peaceful dialogue and diplomatic resolution," he added.
Anwar expressed optimism about the willingness of both nations to pursue peaceful solutions and offered Malaysia’s assistance in facilitating dialogue in the spirit of ASEAN unity. "Malaysia is ready to help and support efforts to restore peace, emphasizing that regional solidarity is our greatest strength," he said.
He also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, affirming that "the strength of ASEAN lies in its collective effort to maintain peace and stability."
In parallel, diplomatic sources reported that the United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on July 25 to discuss the escalating border conflict, according to AFP.
Efforts by ASEAN and the international community continue to focus on de-escalating tensions and encouraging both Cambodia and Thailand to return to dialogue to prevent further violence.
